Johnny Depp first became the face of a successful movie series after his role in Pirates of the Caribbean. This role not only added to Depp’s film heritage, but also gave the actor his own island. This is his old dream.
Even before he got into the Pirates franchise, Depp had a long and successful career. He developed his work in film, starring in films such as Edward Scissorhands, What’s Eating Gilbert’s Grapes, and Sleepy Hollow.
His reputation as a leading man earned him a reputation as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. But behind the scenes, despite his success, Depp has a different, less generous reputation. While many of Depp’s films have been critically acclaimed, some even considered cult classics, their box office performance has been lackluster for some. So at that time, Depp was considered a star, not particularly attracting attention. Pirates helped change perceptions.
“I had 20 years of what the industry basically called failure. For 20 years, I was considered box office poison,” Depp said at a press conference, according to Digital Spy. “As for my process, I didn’t change anything, I didn’t change anything. But this little Pirates of the Caribbean movie came along and I thought, yes, it would be fun to play pirates for my kids.”
The success of Pirates takes on even more irony, given that Depp’s work with characters puts his character at risk.
“I created this character just like everyone else, and I almost got fired, thank God that didn’t happen,” he continued. “It changed my life. I’m very, very grateful that there’s been a fundamental shift, but I didn’t do my best to make it happen.”
The Buccaneers franchise has been great for Depp during his campaign. In addition to cementing his status as a main character, the franchise has also significantly increased Depp’s net worth. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Depp made $10 million for the first pirate movie. He earned $60 million from his second film. The third film “Pirates” brought Depp 55 million dollars. According to Forbes, Depp then allegedly paid $55 million and $90 million for the fourth and fifth films, respectively.
The money Depp made from pirate movies allowed him to enjoy a certain amount of luxury that he had always dreamed of. One of those luxuries is being able to afford your own island.
“The irony is that in 2003 I had the opportunity to make a movie about pirates, and even Disney thought it would fail,” Depp once told Reuters. “That’s what made me buy my dream, buy this island – a pirate movie!”
While Depp took his time to enjoy the fruits of his labor, after a while he felt like he was being paid ridiculously. But Depp took solace in the fact that the money he made from pirated films didn’t belong to him.
“Basically, if they were going to pay me this stupid amount of money right now, I would take it,” he told Vanity Fair in 2011. “I have to do it. I mean, it’s not for me. Do you understand what I mean? At the moment it’s for my children. It’s funny, yes, yes. But ultimately, it’s for me, not right? No, no, it’s for kids.”
